How Far is Seoul from the DMZ? Distance, Drive Time and Best Route (2026)

Short answer: the closest point of the Korean Demilitarized Zone is about 52 km north of Seoul Station, and a tour bus typically reaches it in 60 to 75 minutes depending on traffic.

The road tour buses actually take

Most Seoul-based operators take the Jayu-ro (Freedom Highway) which runs north along the Imjin River. The drive starts in Seoul’s western districts (around Yeongdeungpo or Mapo), heads north past the Hangang riverfront, and runs along the river-fence boundary for the last 20 minutes before Paju. Traffic windows:

  • 06:30–07:30: light. Most tours depart in this window.
  • 07:30–08:30: moderate. Adds 10–15 min vs early departure.
  • 08:30–09:30: heavy. Adds 25–40 min, particularly Mondays and Fridays.
  • 16:00–18:30 (return): consistently heavy. Plan for a slower second half on full-day tours.

How tour pickup points affect your effective distance

Operators pick up from 4 to 8 hotels in 30–45 minutes before heading north. If you stay near the first pickup point, you’ll do the entire round; if you’re at the last stop, you’ll skip the pickup loop and head straight out. Strategic hotel choices that minimise the pickup loop:

  • Myeongdong / Euljiro: usually first or second pickup. Add 30 min on the round.
  • Hongdae / Mapo: often the last pickup before heading north. Add 5–10 min.
  • Gangnam-gu / Sinsa-dong: south of the river β€” extra 15–20 min routing detour.

Going by public transport (without a tour)

You can technically take the Gyeongui-Jungang line from Seoul Station + the DMZ Train to Imjingang Station and walk 12 minutes to Imjingak Park. Round-trip cost: about KRW 12,000 (~USD 9).

But Imjingak Park is the only thing you’ll see. The Third Tunnel, Dora Observatory and Dorasan Station all sit beyond the Civilian Control Line, which requires a registered tour operator with cleared passenger manifest. There’s no walk-in option.

Driving yourself to the DMZ

You can drive to Imjingak in a rental car (free parking) and even to the Third Tunnel access point β€” but you cannot enter the controlled DMZ zone in a private vehicle. The Civilian Control Line gates only open for cleared tour buses and military traffic. In practice, driving yourself only makes sense if you want to combine Imjingak with the Heyri Art Valley and the Paju Outlets β€” none of which are inside the DMZ.

Frequently asked questions

Is Seoul actually close to the DMZ?

Yes β€” alarmingly so by international standards. 52 km from the centre of a 10-million-people capital city. For comparison, that’s about the distance from central London to Brighton β€” a 90-minute drive.

How long does it take to go to the DMZ from Seoul by tour bus?

Door-to-door, including the multi-stop hotel pickup loop, count 1h30 from the moment you leave the hotel lobby to the moment you arrive at Imjingak. The last 20 minutes are along the river-fence boundary.

Can I take a taxi to the DMZ?

You can take a taxi to Imjingak (count KRW 70,000–90,000 / USD 55–70 one-way). You cannot take a taxi beyond the Civilian Control Line β€” only registered tour buses are admitted.

Does the DMZ Train stop at the Third Tunnel?

No. The DMZ Train only goes as far as Dorasan Station, but stops at Imjingang Station for civilian unloading. The Third Tunnel is reached only by tour bus from there.

What’s the closest South Korean city to the DMZ?

Paju (population 470,000) is the closest. Imjingak Park sits in Paju city, about 11 km from the actual MDL line.
